Akwati was created by Yaïsi in 2018. Her childhood was spent in a small town in the Netherlands where she heard the same old question over and over again: ‘no but where are you really from?’. This sparked the need to understand her origins better.

Reconnecting with her family and the conversations she had in Curacao demystified parts of her lineage.
She began reading about the small Caribbean island her family is from and soon learned that they were imported as slaves from Africa. This only solidified her need to understand her ancestry further. After a visit to the Tula museum Yaïsi recognized that she wants to inspire others to explore their African heritage and help them connect with their roots and history.
